У статті досліджено європейську Реформацію та Контрреформацію як альтернативні моделі модернізації крізь призму концепції множинних модерностей Ш. Айзенштадта. Автор показує, що конфесійна конкуренція XVI–XVII ст. сприяла формуванню освітніх, політичних і культурних інсти-тутів модерної Європи. Реформаційна секуляризація знання та католицька реакція у формі Контрреформації розглядаються як взаємодоповнюючі шляхи становлення європейської модерності.
