GREEK WOMEN IN ODESSA: MILESTONES OF HISTORY AND SOCIAL PRACTICES (END OF 19th - END OF 20th CENTURY)

The article focuses on the female component of the Greek community of the city of Odessa for the period from the end of the 19th to end of the 20th century.
Attention is drawn to the quantitative presence of Greeks in Odessa in general and Greek women in particular in the ethnic composition of the city during the period under review. In addition, an attempt is made to trace the features of the social practices of the Odessa Greeks.
The female component of the Greek community has not received due attention by scholars.
Among the important sources for the sociodemographic characteristics of the Greek women of the city at the end of the 19th century are the results from the one-day census of the population in Odessa in 1892, and also the first general census of the Russian Empire in 1897. These sources provide us with a broad sense of the demographic and social characteristics of the Greeks and illustrate their professional status.
The distribution of Greek women by city district shows that the majority lived in the central regions. Specifically, they were mainly distributed among upper-class households in the Boulevard district and middle-class households in the Aleksandrovsky and Kherson districts.
Separately, attention should be devoted to the participation of the Greek women of Odessa in the charitable movement, which is not accidental and is due to certain factors.
Census materials carried out by the Soviet government throughout the twentieth century allow us to trace the dynamics of the size of the Greek community in Odessa. Unfortunately, the statistical data presented above do not provide a complete picture of the employment of Greek women in certain fields of activity, but record their quantitative presence in the Greek community of the South of Ukraine in general and Odessa in particular.
At present, we can only partially investigate this issue through the prism of the activities of the Odessa regional community of Greeks and individual personalities of the Greeks of Odessa, who became known not only due to their activities in a certain area, but also because they belonged to the Greek community.
As a result, the study concludes that the Greeks women of Odessa, in addition to the traditional activities of caring for welfare and family comfort, occupied an important place in the cultural life of the city and played an important role in representing ethnic identity and preserving the unique Greek cultural heritage.
The Greeks attracted the attention of researchers, both in the general context of the historical and economic development of the city, and in certain aspects of their practices, in particular the activities of national societies of the city and region.
