Abstract

The Recent Russian-Ukrainian war began in February 2014 and continues to this day. Since the first year of this war, researchers from various fields have published a large number of studies, the object of which was this war. Many people study this war: historians, political scientists, specialists in military science, social communications, etc. The study of such historical processes should begin with a clear definition of the process’s name and periodization. In Ukrainian historical science, there is a certain problem of a single nam- ing for the Recent Russian-Ukrainian war. Most historians, even within the same text, use several definitions in parallel (for example, Russian aggression, the armed conflict of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, the Recent Russian-Ukrainian war, the Russia’s hybrid war, etc.). In the opinion of the author of this article, it makes sense to arrive at a single universal and clear name for the war – «the Recent Russian-Ukrainian war» (with a capital letter in the Ukrainian language). For the convenience of its future researchers is required a single name for this war, as well as for the sake of expressing the unified position of the scientific community of Ukraine abroad, because the Recent Russian-Ukrainian war continues, it is hybrid and the struggle for meanings is its component. Ukrainian historians created their own versions of the periodization of the Recent Russian-Ukrainian war, today there are two, most clearly expressed views on this issue. The author of the first simple view is P. Gai-Nyzhnyk, the authors of the second are a group of specialists from the National Defense University of Ukraine named after Ivan Chernyakhovskyi (NDUU), in particular, the latest version of the detailed periodization was presented in 2023 by V. Hrytsyuk and O. Lysenko. Summing up, it is worth noting the following – the author of this article adheres to the view that it is worth coming to the use of a single term to designate this war – «the Recent Russian-Ukrainian war», also adheres to the detailed version of the periodization from NDUU specialists as of 2023.
