Previously unpublished sources from the State Archive of the Zaporizhzhia Re-gion are introduced into scholarly circulation. These materials characterize the content, scope, and dynamics of the educational initiatives of philanthropists in the Zaporizhzhia region during the first half of the 19th century, through the prism of the activities of a key figure – Yevdokym Hranobarskyi, Honorary Trustee of the Orikhiv Povit (District) School and Marshal of the Nobility of the Melitopol District of the Tavria Governorate. The social estates of individuals engaged in philanthropic activity are reconstructed. The forms and content of civic initiatives are specified: donations in the form of real estate, finan-cial contributions for the development of district schools, the purchase of educational materials, the provision of student scholarships, and others. The documents make it possible to identify the names of benefactors, to observe the generally modest scale of their activities, to correlate the dynamics of philanthropic development with changes in state policy, to understand the degree of synchronicity between initiatives in the Zaporizhzhia region and those in other regions of Ukraine, and to determine whether these initiatives were interconnected. The preface to the publication highlights the histo-riographical features of the history of philanthropy in Ukraine, clarifies the
broader context of events, and allows for an understanding of the specificity of this phenomenon as dependent on particular historical circumstances. The documents are presented in the author’s Ukrainian translation with maximal preservation of stylistic features and orthography, including the capitalization of certain words. The proposed selection serves as a kind of topographical index of archival documents, which may prove useful for researchers in plan-ning and carrying out the search for sources on the history of philanthropy in Ukraine in the first half of the 19th century.
