The contribution of V.P. Tsesevich in organization of scientific research of variable stars in Ukraine

Abstract

Based on archival materials the activities of the director of the Odessa Astronomical Observatory (1944-1983), Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of URS, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor V.P. Tsesevich on the organization of scientific research of variable stars in Ukraine were considered. The main directions of research of variable stars are determined. The achievements of Odessa astronomers in the study of variable stars at the international level are noted.

The content and main provisions of the analytical review of the state of astronomical studies in Ukraine from the section «Starter Variables», prepared in 1964 by V. P. Tsesevich in the name of Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Director of the Main Astronomical Observatory of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1959-1973) Ye. P. Fedorov, in which the most important problems were considered, the state of the study of variable stars abroad and in the observatories of the Ukrainian SSR was analyzed, and proposals were made for the organization of complex studies of variable stars in Ukraine, namely:

  1. To continue the accumulation of sky images needed at any time to restore star history. The main tool of research should be work on the topic «Service of the sky».
  2. To work on the topic: «Study of variable stars by the photoelectric method», given that even accurate individual research of variable stars requires the establishment of systematic photovoltaic observations.
  3. To unite in the general problem «Study of instability of fluctuations of variable stars in connection with other factors» the revealed phenomena of the stability of fluctuations of regular variable stars.
  4. To overcome the gap in the field of spectral studies in Ukraine, to take measures to equip the Ukrainian observatories with rather powerful telescopes and spectral equipment.
  5. To work on solving the problem of determining the radiation velocities of weak stars. In the following years Ukrainian astronomers successfully worked on the implementation of these tasks.
