PROJECT «DARIAH» AND THE CHALLENGES OF DIGITAL HUMANITIES: A EUROPEAN INTERDISCIPLINARY PLATFORM FOR THE STUDY OF EUROPEAN AND NORTH AMERICAN HISTORY

Abstract

The article examines the activities and strategic role of the European digital research infrastructure project DARIAH (Digital Research Infrastructure for the Arts and Humanities) in addressing the complex challenges of Digital Humanities. Special attention is devoted to DARIAH’s mission as an interdis-ciplinary platform that unites scholars, cultural institutions, and technology experts to create new tools, standards, and collaborative environments for the study of historical and cultural heritage in Europe and, increasingly, North America. The author highlights how the project contributes to the integration of digital methods into historical research, archival preservation, linguistic analysis, and cultural memory studies, thereby expanding the epistemological horizons of the humanities.

The article outlines the key methodological and institutional challenges that DARIAH seeks to overcome, including the fragmentation of data sources, the need for long-term digital preservation, and the question of interoperability between diverse national infrastructures. Emphasis is placed on the project’s role in promoting open science, ensuring access to digitized sources, and fostering the sustainable development of knowledge networks across borders. Moreover, DARIAH is analyzed as a driver of interdisciplinary dialogue that enables historians, philologists, anthropologists, and information scientists to work within a shared digital ecosystem.

By exploring DARIAH’s projects and collaborations, the article demonstrates how digital infrastructures contribute not only to academic innovation but also to strengthening European cultural identity and transatlantic scholarly exchange. In conclusion, the author argues that the integration of digital technologies into the humanities – exemplified by DARIAH – constitutes a decisive step toward building a more inclusive, dynamic, and globally con-nected vision of historical and cultural heritage research in the digital age.
