Abstract

The article consists of a series of essays that demonstrate the cognitive po-tential and pitfalls in the terminology of Ukrainian history from the 9th to the 17th centuries.
It emphasises the self-sufficient power of words – names, concepts, terms – in general conceptual constructions. The ability of concepts and names to play different roles in historical discourses – conceptual shifts, innovation, anach-ronism, meaningless balancing acts, propaganda, myth-making – is traced. The author argues that the purpose of fundamental concepts is to convey meaning, reveal the inner essence of phenomena, and facilitate professional communication among historians.
The responsibility of historians for their vocabulary in a period of absolute freedom of creative expression is emphasised. Was Kievan Rus a «chieftain monarchy», a «military monarchy» or a «polity»? Were the kings of Poland Polish? Should the royal power of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth be called an estate monarchy, an elective monarchy, or a contractual monarchy? What exactly do historians mean when they use semi-poetic expressions such as «Rus» is at war with Rus’» or «Rus’ meets Rus’»? Was the Lower Dnieper region in the 14th–17th centuries a Wild Field, Zaporizhzhia, or a frontier?
Was the Cossack community a military camp, an order, or a republic?
The book shows how historians in Lithuania, Germany, and Poland solve similar issues.
