THE IMAGE OF URBAN JEWS OF THE SOUTH OF UKRAINE IN THE TRAVEL GUIDE BOOKS OF THE TRAVELERS OF THE LATE 18TH – 19TH CENTURIES

The paper characterizes the image of urban Jews of the South of Ukraine in the travel guide books of Russian and foreign travelers in the late 18th – 19th centuries. At that time considerable geopolitical changes caused by the incorporation of the region into the Russian Empire occurred on the territory of Southern Ukraine. Construction of new towns and colonization of the territories by the representatives of many nationalities were consequences of these processes. Many Jewish people with a determined limit of settlement inhabited the towns of the South of Ukraine as well. Among the Russian citizens and the foreigners there were many people willing to estimate the geopolitical changes in the South of Ukraine personally.
