The aim of the study is to clarify the circumstances surrounding M. Hruthe University of Lviv. The methodological foundation of the work is based on an interdisciplinary approach. Particular emphasis is placed on the structural-functional and systemic analysis of historiographical facts and the comparative-historical method, guided by the principles of objectivity and historicism. The study also employed methods of periodization, classification, and typologization. The scientific novelty of the article lies in an attempt to provide a holistic reconstruction of the process by which M. Hrushevsky was appointed to the Department of Ukrainian History at the University of Lviv. Conclusions. The reconstruction carried out in the study demonstrated that M. Hrushevsky’s relocation to Lviv to assume the position of professor of the Department of World History with special emphasis on the past of Eastern Europe at the University of Lviv became possible through a successful combi-nation of several subjective and objective factors. Among the latter were the relatively high level of cultural and political self-organization of the Ukraini-ans under Austrian rule, who, from the time of the «Spring of Nations» to the end of the 19th century, had convincingly justified and persuaded the public of the need for a native-language higher education system in general and the establishment of a Department of Ukrainian History at the University of Lviv in particular. Among the subjective factors, the personal element played a decisive role, as both the Lviv and Kyiv initiators of this cultural endeavor, as well as the candidates for the chair, were fully aware of the historical signif-icance of the moment and therefore unhesitatingly prioritized their national duty over personal interest. In this situation, V. Antonovych found himself in a particularly difficult position. Understanding his own indispensability as a candidate at the beginning of negotiations, he was also acutely aware of the considerable challenges the newly established department would face. By skillfully maneuvering among the Galician narodovtsi (national activists), Viennese bureaucrats, and Kyiv hromada members, he successfully managed to postpone the department’s opening for a year, right until his outstanding student had obtained his master’s degree. The intense emotions of those involved in establishing the department reflected the complexity of this pro-cess, but the risks it entailed were fully justified by the epoch-making results of Hrushevsky’s subsequent scholarly and intellectual work as a professor.
