850 years is the author’s metaphorical reminder that Muscovy-Russia-USSR-RF waged a continuous series of wars on Ukrainian lands. Wars of conquest were dissembled by various lofty goals. But the essence was the same: conquest and subjugation. The article contains the chronology of these wars. The author draws attention to the fact that the war against Ukraine was also waged in the so-called «interwar» periods. In confirmation, he cites an outline of the everyday life of the Ukrainian peasantry in the 1920s. In 1921–1922, a real war was waged for the peasants’ bread with the involvement of regular army units, with the capture of hostages, with show executions. The specter of war constantly hung in the air. Thousands of letters from peasants sent to the editorial office of the Ukrainian-language newspaper «Soviet Village» in 1926–1928 testify to the wide spread of rumors about the approach of war. Most of the peasants did not consider the Bolshevik government to be their own and had no intention of defending it in the event of a war. And just in case, they stocked up on salt, soap, kerosene and matches. The author notes the unfortunate fact that ethnic kinship does not guarantee peace and harmony. From this point of view, criticism directed against the «national paradigm» of Ukrainian history is perceived ambiguously: it has not only a constructive component, but also a trap of false political correctness
