MEDIEVAL AND EARLY MODERN HISTORY OF UKRAINE IN THE LIGHT OF POST-COLONIAL STUDIES

Stereotypes, clichés, labels, terminological anachronisms are revealed in the medieval and early modern history of Ukraine are identified in a wide time range - from the 9th to the 17th centuries.
The task is set to get rid of the colonial past in the reflection of its history, namely: manifestations of historiographic inferiority and provincialism. From the perspective of postcolonial studies, individual topics from the his-tory of Ukraine that suffered the most from ideological deformations are analyzed: the «Lithuanian-Polish era», Cossack-noble relations, Cossack-Tatar neighborhood, interfaith struggle in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The usefulness of the tools of postcolonial criticism for studying various types and manifestations of cultural dependence arising as a result of the dominance of foreign culture over local one is emphasized. The experience of writing history “without bromine” is summarized. The importance of research tech-nologies of cultural-istorical anthropology as one of the intensive sources of methodological renewal of Ukrainian historiography is emphasized.
The author argues that postcolonialism for a historian is not so much a claim against the colonizer and imperialist, but rather work on oneself, on one’s professional language.
