This article examines the nature and informative potential of photographic documents produced as a result of the operations of enterprises within the Dnipro Industrial Complex in the city of Zaporizhzhia during the Soviet era in the history of Ukraine. Attribution and classification of photo documents found in museum and archival collections of the region were carried out, with an emphasis on the functional purpose of the images. The research has considered the most typical situations that prompted the communist-Soviet management of factories and their ordinary workers to capture events of political, economic, and social life. It has been discovered that the process of photography played an important role in shaping the ideological perspective of workers, aiming to construct a «Soviet identity». The research has demonstrated the predominantly subjective nature of Soviet factory photography and has indicated the need for a critical analysis of its visual text.
